Line Up for Linemen

As we prepare for a major ice and snowstorm that is likely to cause widespread power outages, utility linemen from across Virginia and neighboring states are already traveling here to help restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

Line Up for Linemen is a community-wide effort to support these workers — and other first responders — before, during, and after the storm.

These crews are working long hours in dangerous conditions, often far from home, staying in hotels without family or local support. This initiative is about showing up for the people who show up for us.

What We’re Doing

Line Up for Linemen focuses on meeting practical, immediate needs during extended outages, including:

  • Meals and food support for linemen and first responders working in the field
  • Care for visiting crews, including access to food and fresh laundry if outages last several days
  • Supplies and essentials to support those working long hours in harsh weather

Our goal is simple: remove barriers so crews can focus on restoring power safely and efficiently.

How the Community Can Help

This initiative depends on community support in several key ways:

1. Volunteers:  

  • Coordinating and delivering food
  • Assisting with laundry support if outages are prolonged
  • Helping distribute supplies to designated locations

2. Food & Restaurant Partners

We are reaching out first to local restaurants and food businesses, especially those with perishable inventory that could be lost during a power outage.

If your business may lose refrigerated or frozen food, we want to work with you before the storm (Friday and Saturday) to:

  • Safely collect usable food
  • Store it at approved locations
  • Have meals ready for crews once the storm hits

This approach helps reduce food waste and supports those on the front lines.

3. Financial Support

Donations will be used to:

  • Purchase additional food and supplies as needed
  • Cover costs associated with storage, transport, and coordination
  • Respond quickly as conditions change

Why This Matters

Linemen and first responders will be working around the clock in dangerous, freezing conditions to restore power for our community. Many are far from home, without local support systems.

This is our opportunity to take care of them — the same way they take care of us.
