Join us as Kelly Navies speaks about her work at the National Museum of African American History and Culture as the Museum Specialist in Oral History. She will discuss the role of the oral history initiative in upholding the museum's mission to tell the American story through an African American lens and share examples from some of NMAAHC’s oral history projects. Work examples include the Civil Rights History Project, the Collection Donor’s Oral History Project, and the Poor People’s Campaign Oral History Project. You won’t want to miss this!


Presenter Bio: Kelly Elaine Navies is the Museum Specialist in Oral History for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. In this position, she coordinates all aspects of the Oral History Initiative. She has been conducting oral history research for over twenty-five years since she was an undergraduate in African American Studies at UC Berkeley. Her passion for oral history and African American Studies carried her into graduate work at UNC Chapel Hill where she studied at the Southern Oral History Program. She later received a Master’s in Library and Information Science from the Catholic University of America with an emphasis in Cultural Heritage. Navies’ oral history projects and interviews are currently located at UNC Chapel Hill’s Southern Oral History Program, The Reginald F. Lewis Maryland Museum of African American History and Culture, the Washington DC Public Library, and at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Most recently, she was co-chair of the programming committee for the 2020 Oral History Association Annual Conference, “The Quest for Democracy: One Hundred Years of Struggle” (virtual). Finally, her writing may be found in several publications including, June Jordan’s Poetry for The People: A Revolutionary Blueprint, edited by Lauren Muller, and Bum Rush the Page: A def poetry jam, edited by Tony Medina and Louis Reyes Rivera.
