
Grounds Maintenance Coordinator
POSITION SUMMARY:
The person selected will work with a staff team to facilitate and oversee the grounds maintenance for County facilities, parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields. In addition to the ground’s maintenance responsibilities, this person will also provide support and assistance in the implementation of LCPRT special events. This position will be under the direct supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & JOB DUTIES:
- Works with the Grounds Maintenance Manager to plan, organize, and ensure the completion of the scheduled grounds maintenance responsibilities
- Cut grass, weed eat, rake, mulch around shrubbery and trees, lime, fertilize and aerate at county owned buildings, recycle sites and park facility properties
- Perform maintenance duties on trails and walking paths on county parks and recreational areas
- Mulch playground areas, make minor repairs of playground equipment, and perform minor developmental procedures of current park sites owned by the County of Louisa.
- Performs related tasks as required
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists with developmental procedures of current and future park sites owned by the County of Louisa.
- Advises Grounds Maintenance Manager on budget matters related to site maintenance.
- Provide support for County-sponsored special events including but not limited to setting up tables, chairs, tents and other equipment, vendor coordination, and event supervision, as appropriate.
- Assists with snow removal and provides support for emergency shelter operations.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.

- Requires strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to supervise others, respond tactfully and professionally to work effectively as a motivated team member and maintain positive, professional relationships with co-workers, the citizens and public officials at all times.
- In addition, the position requires the ability and desire to provide quality ground maintenance for Louisa County. Excellent time management and organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to demonstrate initiative using sound, professional judgment also essential.
- The position also requires schedule flexibility to meet the needs of the operations of the Department and the County.
- Excellent customer skills are crucial to deal with a broad range of customers.
- An in-depth knowledge of supervisory principles and practices, departmental best practices, and County policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to: interpret, apply and manage others on departmental and County policies and procedures; Instruct, motivate, and train subordinates in all phases of the work and assist them with work problems and issues.
- Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, policies, and codes affecting grounds maintenance, to include OSHA/VOSH, ADA requirements/compliance.
- Proven knowledge of safe work practices.
- The ability to exercise sound professional and personal judgment, discretion, tact and resourcefulness and make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures when problem solving.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective, successful, professional working relationships with co-workers, public officials, customers, and the public in a positive and tactful manner under sometimes stressful and sensitive situations to resolve issues tactfully and diplomatically.
- Must have a proven ability to maintain professional ethics.
- Must be able to demonstrate attention to detail, along with sound organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, effective listening skills and the ability to understand and follow directions.
- Must be flexible in responding to changes and schedules and job priorities
- Mathematical skills required to calculate percentages, formulas, and averages to solve mathematical problems and make mathematical computations with accuracy.
- Knowledge of best practices of office procedures, English, grammar, and punctuation.
- Ability to write clear and concise specifications.
- Requires regular attendance and adherence to County policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness and requesting time off from work.
- Work well under pressure.
- Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and TRAINING
The position requires a High School Diploma and a minimum of four years of grounds
maintenance and athletic field management. NRPA Certified Playground Inspector
Certification is preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Environmental: This position will require a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the Department and the County to include evening, weekend and occasional holiday hours. Work is typically performed in an outdoor setting. May be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform specific duties or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency. Must be available for regular standby assignments and work scheduled for regular standby assignments; for work scheduled off-hours, for emergencies as required.
- Physical Effort: Light to moderate work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Will be required to bend, crawl and/or kneel to access areas requiring repair or installation. May be required to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds regularly. Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical work. Will work in various adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes. Will be required to climb ladders, utilize lifts, and stand for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Hazards: Employee is subject to both inside and outside conditions; activities occur inside and outside in approximately equal amounts. Exposure to chemicals. Exposure to inclement weather. Operation of motor vehicle and/or heavy construction equipment and power tools.
- Environmental: Work is typically performed in an outdoor setting. The department is currently open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. This position will require a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the Department and the County to include evening, weekend and occasional holiday hours.
- Physical Effort: Heavy Work: Lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Hazards: The employee is subject to outdoor environmental conditions. Wet and/or humid: contact with water, ice or other liquids or exposure to weather-related humid conditions. Operates lawn maintenance equipment in which special precautionary measures may need to be followed. Exposure to lawn chemicals including lime, fertilizers and pesticides and others were deemed necessary.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OR REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be willing to submit to a criminal background and Motor Vehicles check.
- Must consent to drug testing consistent with Louisa County’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Must maintain a driving record consistent with insurance industry standards in order to drive a County vehicle.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Ability to meet and maintain compliance with standards as set forth in the appropriate sections of the County of Louisa Employee Handbook
- Twelve (12) month probationary period.
