Firefly celebrates 4 years in business; 15,000 service connections

8/30/2022

Palmyra, Virginia — Firefly Fiber BroadbandSM, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), celebrated its fourth business anniversary in July and reached a pivotal milestone this month of 15,000 customers connected to its world-class, gigabit speed fiber broadband.

Customers celebrated the company’s birthday with kind words of praise for how the services have changed their lives.

“Firefly could not have come at a better time for us. With the onset of the pandemic and my wife forced to teach from home, Firefly was essential to support teaching from home and helping the kids finish the school year. For our immediate family, which is spread from Virginia to New York to Seattle, Firefly allowed us to continue holidays and family nights virtually. We watch movies, play games, and just socialize. We enjoy our family nights so much, they continue to this day.” -William K.

“Having Firefly has made my work life so much easier. I work remotely 100% and it was taking hours to download work files. It now happens within minutes. Surfing the internet for the rest of the family on a personal note is so much quicker now.” -Shelby S.

On the accolades and service milestone, Firefly President and CEO, Gary Wood, said, “Firefly is celebrating this milestone alongside the 15,000 rural residences and businesses that finally have access to reliable, affordable high-speed internet. We are proud to serve our community by bridging the digital divide, and look forward to connecting the next 15,000 in the coming years.”

CVEC and Firefly are accelerating their efforts to make broadband service available to every CVEC member a full year earlier than projected, and are on schedule to complete the mainline fiber construction on that project by the fourth quarter 2022. Upon completion, 38,000 CVEC members will have access to Firefly’s fiber-to-the home internet.

Firefly’s team is pressing ahead as they plan for bold new growth and expansion in the next three years. This expansion includes the much-anticipated Regional Internet Service Expansion (RISE) project, a partnership with Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, Dominion Energy, and 13 counties designed to bridge the digital divide and bring Firefly’s lightning-fast internet to over 36,000 unserved and underserved homes and businesses in rural areas throughout central Virginia.
