FIREFLY FIBER BROADBAND CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS IN BUSINESS; BRINGS WORLD-CLASS, GIGABIT-SPEED FIBER BROADBAND TO TENS OF THOUSANDS UNDERSERVED CENTRAL VIRGINIANS
July 27, 2023
Palmyra, Virginia — Firefly Fiber BroadbandSM, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), along with its Board and industry partners, is delighted to celebrate another milestone year of connection successes.
Firefly was born out of a desire to bridge the digital divide and provide reliable, high-speed internet to over 38,000 CVEC members, thus improving their quality of life. Its customer-centric services were designed with no contracts or data caps and offer symmetrical upload and download speeds with no slowdowns.
Customers, like Regina R. from Amherst county, are eager to share their Firefly story.
“What a wonderful blessing to finally get Firefly in my home last year! I went from no internet to dial up to sitting in my car at the local McDonald’s parking lot to download things. Now I can stream and watch shows from the comfort of my sofa! Thank you, Firefly!”
The $150M dollar investment has succeeded in delivering over 22,000 connections, exceeding 3,600 miles of built fiber, and passing more than 40,000 homes and businesses.
And there’s no slowing down.
Profound growth and expansion will be seen over the next two years as Firefly expands beyond the CVEC territory. Through its Regional Internet Service Expansion (RISE) project, Firefly will partner with Appalachian Power, Dominions Energy and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, to provide universal broadband service to all underserved locations across 13 counties. For more information about the RISE project, visit www.fireflyva.com/rise.
“The power of partnerships and the grant funds available on the local, state, and federal level have made this expansion a possibility. Rural central Virginians will have access to reliable and affordable fiber broadband and no longer grapple with connectivity for work, education, health, business, and entertainment,” says Firefly President and CEO, Gary Wood.
