Firefly Fiber BroadbandSM celebrates 35,000 residential and business fiber broadband connections

1/31/2025

Palmyra, Virginia — Firefly Fiber BroadbandSM, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), is proud to announce that it has achieved the remarkable milestone of 35,000 fiber broadband connections. This significant achievement underscores Firefly's unwavering commitment to bridge the digital divide by delivering reliable and affordable, high-speed internet to residential and business customers across 13 counties in central Virginia.

The expansion of Firefly's network plays a crucial role in facilitating remote work, online education, telehealth, and other essential services and businesses that rely on robust internet connectivity.

“Reaching 35,000 connections is a testament to the tireless efforts of the Firefly team and the invaluable support from our partners, Board of Directors, local governments, and the communities we serve,” said Gary Wood, Firefly’s President & CEO.

CVEC launched the fiber build in 2019 to improve reliability and lower costs on its electric system and offers members the option to subscribe to fiber internet via Firefly. Firefly’s Regional Internet Service Expansion (RISE) Project was launched in 2021 to expand broadband beyond CVEC’s territory to parts of 13 counties, making high-speed internet accessible to neighboring underserved rural communities. Through a partnership with Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC), Dominion Energy Virginia, and the counties of Albemarle, Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, and Powhatan, Firefly’s RISE Project will make high-speed internet accessible to more 70,000 locations.

As Firefly looks to the future, the company remains focused on delivering world-class fiber internet and VoIP solutions along with outstanding customer service to ensure every customer receives the assistance they need.
