Firefly Launches “Be a Good Neighbor” Campaign to Protect Fiber Lines

Palmyra, Virginia — Firefly Fiber BroadbandSM, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), is proud to announce a new community awareness initiative: the “Be a Good Neighbor” campaign. The campaign is designed to raise awareness and prevent accidental damage to fiber and utility lines, which can disrupt service for entire neighborhoods and result in costly repairs.

As dove hunting season approaches, Firefly is reminding residents and sportsmen that aiming at birds perched on powerlines and fiber lines can cause serious harm beyond what’s visible. A single shot can sever internet and utility connections for hundreds of homes, leading to thousands of dollars in repairs and extended outages.

“Fiber lines don’t just carry internet — they carry our neighbors’ ability to work, learn, and stay connected,” said Firefly Communications Manager, Melissa Gay. “With our ‘Be a Good Neighbor’ campaign, we’re asking the community to look out for one another by protecting this shared resource.”

The campaign emphasizes three key messages:

  • Think Before You Aim: Shooting at power or fiber lines is dangerous and illegal.
  • Stay Connected: One damaged line can cut off an entire community’s internet and phone service, causing safety concerns for residents and public safety officials.
  • Be a Good Neighbor: Respect the connections that keep friends, families, and businesses online.

Through digital outreach by email and social media presence, Firefly is working to raise awareness of the importance of protecting fiber lines and the role they play in modern life.

“We’re grateful to live and work in a community that values connection,” added Gary Wood, Firefly President & CEO. “By being a good neighbor, we all win.”
