Louisa County High School Gets a Seed Library
LOUISA COUNTY, Va. — Virginia Free Farm is bringing seed sovereignty into the classroom with the installation of the first of two new seed libraries at Louisa County High School, with support from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. The new seed library will be available for students to begin using next week, providing immediate access to seeds and new opportunities for hands-on, nature-based learning.
The seed library will give students direct access to vegetable, herb, flower, and other seeds while creating opportunities for experiential learning centered on gardening, agriculture, ecology, nutrition, and the local food system. A second seed library is planned for the school, further expanding students’ access to seeds and hands-on educational opportunities.
For Virginia Free Farm, placing seed libraries where young people learn is an important extension of its work to increase access to seeds, fresh food, agricultural knowledge, and the skills needed to build more resilient communities.
