Louisa Police Department joins Lights On!

The first law enforcement agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia

9/7/2022

The Louisa Police Department has joined the Lights On! program, becoming the first law enforcement agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia to welcome the program into its community. This partnership expands the Lights On! program to a total of 16 states.

Lights On!(lightsonus.org) is a non-profit organization that will pay up to $250.00 to make lighting repairs to motor vehicles. No taxpayer funds are being used to support the program.

Louisa Police Department serves a diverse community where nearly 20% of its residents live at or below the poverty line. LPD officers often encounter residents who lack the financial ability to properly maintain their vehicles with fully functional headlights and taillights.

When an LPD officer stops a motorist for a moving violation and observes additional violations related to defective lighting equipment, the officer may provide a repair voucher to the driver in lieu of a summons. The voucher can be redeemed at a local participating auto repair shop.

Currently, the Louisa Police Department has two auto repair shops serving the program, Kenny’s Central Auto Center (204 East Main Street, Louisa, VA) and Haymaker Auto Repair (17435 Louisa Road, Louisa, VA).

Assistance from the Louisa County Chamber of Commerce, the willingness of our two auto repair shop owners to support their police department and fellow community members, and the leadership of Sherman Patterson with Lights On! made it possible for us to bring this valuable community policing program to the residents of Louisa.
