PVCC Announces Fine Arts and Performance Fall 2021 Season Lineup

Charlottesville, Va. – August 23, 2021 – Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) announces its fall 2021 Fine Arts and Performance season lineup. Programs include a mind-reading illusionist, a drama based on “Mother of American Modernism” Georgia O’Keeffe, live Afro-Puerto Rican music and many returning favorites.

Known as the “extraordinist” for his mystifying performances, mentalist/illusionist Craig Karges will open the season on Friday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m., with his original blend of magic, psychology and intuition. Tables float, metal bends and minds are read as Karges predicts, word for word, what random audience members will say, do or think. And for those skeptics who suspect Karges plants participants in the theatre to enhance or manipulate the show, the performer pledges to pay $100,000 to charity if it can be proven.

Karges is an award-winning entertainer whose thousands of performances have taken him around the globe and had him appear on numerous TV networks and late-night talk shows such as Larry King Live and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Dennis Miller, comedian and media personality, put it this way after seeing Karges perform, “This weirds me out!” Ticket prices for Craig Karges are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.

On Saturday, October 9, critically acclaimed playwright and actor Lucinda McDermott’s dramatic portrayal of iconic artist Georgia O’Keeffe asks the question, "Was it me or was it Stieglitz?” Husband Alfred Stieglitz played a key role in O’Keeffe’s life and career and she now wonders if she would have achieved the same successes without him. “O’Keeffe!” starts at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students.

Hailing from Puerto Rico by way of Richmond, orchestra leader Maurice Sanabria-Ortiz and “Kadencia” share the rhythmic sounds of the island’s traditional “bomba y plena” forms and other Latin forms like salsa. The group will perform with a hearty brass section and plenty of percussion on Saturday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students.

The PVCC Visual Arts Department will host perennial favorite “Let There Be Light” as a showcase of light-based art installations on the PVCC campus, as in years past, on Friday, December 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. Additionally, the exhibition will expand, illuminating locations in and around Charlottesville on the following night, Saturday, December 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. This event is free of charge.

The season also features performances by the PVCC Theatre and PVCC Music Departments along with an array of other free events such as local documentarian Ty Cooper’s filmmaking workshop, art exhibitions and opening receptions, popular movie screenings and more.

All events, other than Saturday night’s Let There Be Light exhibition, will take place in the V. Earl Dickinson Building, located at the south end of 501 College Drive on the PVCC Main Campus.

Many of the PVCC Fine Arts and Performance season events are free. When tickets are required, patrons are encouraged to purchase advance tickets online at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts or by calling the PVCC Box Office at 434.961.5376 (major credit cards accepted). The PVCC Cashier’s Office, located in the Main Building, will also have tickets available for purchase during normal business hours. Tickets may also be purchased starting two hours prior to the performance at the PVCC Box Office if still available.
