RT. 617 CLOSING IN LOUISA CO. FOR BRIDGE REHABILITATION

CULPEPER – The Virginia Department of Transportation will temporarily close Route 617 (East Green Springs Road) in Louisa County beginning Monday, April 21 to allow for rehabilitation work on the bridge over Wheeler Creek.

The current structure has a posted weight limit of 12 tons and measures 13 feet, 5 inches wide. The Louisa Residency bridge crew will remove the existing steel beam, timber deck, widen the abutments, and replace the superstructure with a new steel beam, timber deck.

Once finished, the rehabilitated bridge will be about 16 feet wide and capable of carrying all legal loads.

During construction, Route 617 will be closed to all traffic 0.4 miles from Route 640 (East Jack Jouett Road) to 1.6 miles from U.S. 15 (James Madison Highway). VDOT is not posting a detour since the traffic volume is low so drivers should find alternate routes during the closure.

Electronic message boards were placed along Route 617 on April 7 to notify drivers of the upcoming closure. The work is expected to be completed and the road reopened by Thursday, June 19, weather permitting.

Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are posted to X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page.

Current traffic conditions, VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras and other real-time travel information are on the 511Virginia website. That information is also available on the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
